Here are some miscellaneous items that do not fit directly into FX thoughts, and yet have a bearing one way or another on my trading.  The quotations section is something I've been meaning to do for a long time.  Most of these quotations do not come from trading sources, yet speak volumes to me as a trader and risk taker.   I hope that others will also be able to relate to some of these insights.

Quotations  Brief Career Highlights

Quotations (Very much work-in-progress!)

'There is only one reason to do anything: as a statement to the universe of Who You Are'

- Neale Donald Walsh

similarly - 'Your only obligation in any lifetime is to be true to yourself'

- Richard Bach

One of my all time favorites - The Ultimate Success Formula:

Decide what it is that you're absolutely committed to achieving

Take massive action

Notice what's working, and what is not

Continue to change your approach until you achieve what you want

- Anthony Robbins

There are a number of Zen style trading books out there.  You know, the Sun Tzu's Art of War for Traders, ilk.  I have a certain amount of trouble with these because their focus always seems to be portraying the market as the enemy that will either defeat you or bow to your warrior skills.

For me I think a better analogy for the market is that of an ocean, which is neither friend nor foe.  There are times when we can go out and harvest some of it's bounty, and other times when we need to pay attention to the weather forecast and remain safely in port.   Nonetheless many of these books are a wonderful source of quotations and none better than 'Manual of the Warrior of Light' by Paulo Coelho, which is full of bit sized morsels for traders like :

'The warrior does not listen to what the devil is telling him; he is master of his sword'

which to me says, 'plan the trade, trade your plan'.

'For many, the freely accepted challenge of the markets provides a high risk game of financial life and death

For some, the markets offer a profession, providing steady and above average income

For the very few, they are a mighty engine which can, with skill, be used to create vast wealth

-Jake Bernstein

On perseverance: 'You have to be ready to take advantage of situations as and when they arise.  Perseverance allows you to hold on while the Universal Law delivers'

-Stuart Wilde

Your friends will know you better in the first minute you meet, than your acquaintances will know you in a thousand years

-Richard Bach

It's in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped

- Anthony Robbins

Do, or do not.  There is no try
- Yoda

and from the IT industry, the self-admonishment of KISS and the infamously rude 7 p's

'Keep it simple, stupid'

'Prior proper planning prevents piss-poor performance'

Brief career highlights

I have been asked a few times about my fx background; how I got into the business and related experience, so here's a very condensed history.

Early in my career I was fortunate enough to land a job in the City of London with Bankers Trust International, in their Cash department.    As it transpired it turned out that I was the only one who could accurately calculate the trading prices of CD's, and thus a trading career was born.   I later moved to Bank of Nova Scotia's trading desk in London, and then to their main trading operation at Head Office in Toronto.  Subsequently to that I continued my trading career in the US .

Computers were just getting a start then, and I was fascinated with the idea of applying computing to my trading skills.   I retrained, initially as a programmer, and then pursued a career that was primarily one of designing treasury systems for a number of major banks.   However, I always wanted to get back to trading itself, and more importantly, trading for myself.   Finally, in pursuit of this aim, I took a senior IT position with a Stock broker to see the 'wealth-creation' business from the inside.

I went out on my own in March 1999.
